Backlinks are a commodity since Google uses the popularity of links to classify websites. There are people who want to buy and who want to sell them, like all commodities. Many types of connection transactions are available, including paid directory entries and paid PR1/2 pages. A whole industry has been developing in the mid-2000s to offer ties. Soon Google was able to recognize, devalue and depreciate the interest of paying directory connections. In the mid-2000s, text link advertising increased, resulting in the rise in paying PR pages and the cost in “rental” connections.
